Friend of the Court
The Friend of the Court was established to help each County's Circuit Court manage your divorce if minor children are involved. Both parents who have minor children are required to go to the Friend of the Court (FOC) where the FOC will assist in such issues as spousal support, parenting time and child support.

Some services the FOC may help provide include:

  • Conducting investigations and making recommendations regarding custody, parenting time, and child support.
  • Providing formal and informal mediation services to settle custody & parenting time disputes.
  • Enforcing custody and parenting time orders through administrative and judicial actions.
  • Holding Early Intervention Conferences (EICs) to assess divorce cases, and acquaint parties with FOC services.
  • Conducting orientation sessions and sponsoring parenting programs designed to help parents reduce the stress of divorce on their minor children
  • Providing forms and instructions for filing custody, parenting time, and support motions as well as grievances.
  • Assisting the Michigan State Disbursement Unit (MiSDU) in collecting, recording, and distributing support payments.
State and Local FOC Links
The State of Michigan provides management assistance to the Friend of Court Offices in each Michigan County through the office of the Friend of the Court Bureau. There is also a List of each Friend of the Court Office in each Michigan County with addresses and telephone numbers. The State Court Administrative Office (SCAO) also publishes a Friend of the Court Handbook. The handbook summarizes the Friend of the Court’s duties and procedures in domestic relations cases, the parties’ rights and responsibilities, and some basic court procedures. Finally, the SCOA has posted downloadable forms relating to parenting time, child support, change of circumstances, and other Friend of the Court matters.
